Human Rights Activist Asma Jilani Jahangir Passes Away

Asma Jilani Jahangir, a Pakistani lawyer, human rights activist, and former Asia Center Tsai Lecturer, passed away Sunday at the age of 66. She is remembered, among other roles, as a democracy activist whose work focused on prevention of persecution of religious minorities and gender equality. She was a founding member and chairwoman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and was President of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan. She also served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief.

In March 2015, the Asia Center featured Asma for its 10th annual Tsai Lecture, where she gave a talk, “Pakistan: From Crisis to Crisis” (watch video).
