In September 2018, the Asia Center will welcome as postdoctoral fellows two recent Ph.D.s: Professor Elsa Clavé from Goethe University, and Dr. Xiaofei Gao from the University of California, Santa Cruz. The Asia Center Postdoctoral Fellowship and the Victor and William Fung Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship are the first postdoctoral fellowships to be offered by the Asia Center in its effort to promote intra- and inter-Asian research.
Professor Clavé will be writing a book on the political culture of Southeast Asian sultanates. Dr. Gao will be writing a book on 20th-century Maritime Manchuria.
The fellowships are offered to recent Ph.D. graduates in the humanities, social sciences, and related fields who engage seriously with at least two Asian countries, although single-country consideration is made for Southeast Asia. Postdoctoral Fellows are chosen by a faculty committee.
