The Essentiality of “Heartware” in the Socio-Technical Transition towards Sustainability: Perspectives from Malaysia
Speaker: Zeeda Fatimah Mohamad, University of Malaysia
Moderator: Victor Seow, Harvard University
In this talk the speaker will share my ~10 years reflection in exploring the value of "Heartware" as an Asian-inspired conceptual approach within my predominantly western training in science and technology studies and sustainability science. Specifically, she will discuss this journey through the lens of my empirical work on integrated watershed management (IWM) in Malaysia. IWM is often focused on the technical and structural interventions (hardware) and policy and management strategies (software), with less attention given on how these hardware and software approaches are connected to the “heartware” that are organically and internally driven by the shared values of diverse communities in our country's multicultural setting. Insights on how this approach can be essential to enhance socio-technical transition towards sustainable watershed management—especially in dealing with knowledge asymmetries and the politics of blending science, technology and local knowledge—will be discussed.
