Loten Namling at Harvard: A Musical Tribute to Tibet's January 7 Earthquake Victims
Loten Namling is a Tibetan musician, singer, multimedia artist, curator, filmmaker, and activist dedicated to preserving and sharing Tibetan culture. Born in Darjeeling to Tibetan refugee parents, he studied philosophy at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and now resides in Switzerland. Trained by his mother in dranyen (Tibetan lute) and singing, Namling has performed worldwide for over 45 years, blending traditional Tibetan music with blues, rock, and world music. His Holiness the Dalai Lama praised him as a “virtuous and faithfully dedicated musician.” In 2015, he founded Porok Karpo, a Swiss-Tibetan rock fusion band. His activism includes the Journey for Freedom – One Man, One Path project, where he dragged a coffin marked “FREE TIBET” from Bern to Geneva, inspiring the documentary Tibetan Warrior (2015). Namling has released five albums and acted in films like Shambhala (2024) and Looking for a Lady with Fangs and a Moustache (2019).
