Eugene Chua
Eugene is a senior in Harvard College jointly concentrating in History & Literature and East Asian Studies, with a secondary in Statistics and a citation in French. Born and raised in Singapore, he is a recipient of the Public Service Commission (Education) and the President’s Scholarship, the Singapore government’s most prestigious undergraduate scholarship. He is curious about questions of citizenship and belonging, collective memory and nationalism — especially as they are explored in Southeast Asian literature and film. In his senior thesis, he intends to connect his interests in urban studies, historical memory, and contemporary fiction; he will analyse high-rise columbariums and housing board flats as symbols of progress and government control in Singaporean media. Outside of academics, Eugene is an avid concertgoer and frisbee player, and oversees the Southeast Asia Exchange. After graduating, he will pursue a Postgraduate Diploma in Education and work as a high school teacher and policymaker.
