Harvard Asia Center Exhibits:
A 20TH ANNIVERSARY RETROSPECTIVE
Asian Centers’ Lounge, 1st Floor, CGIS South, 1730 Cambridge St., Cambridge
In 2011, the Harvard Asia Center and the Center for Islamic Studies hosted Master Haji Noor Deen, who led a demonstration seminar on Arabic-Chinese calligraphy. As part of his presentation, he created a magical “pop-up” gallery, transforming the seminar room and the space outside into an instant art gallery. The following summer, the two centers organized an extensive exhibit of his calligraphy, which was displayed in the Japan Friends of Harvard Concourse in CGIS South.
Since then, the Asia Center has organized or co-sponsored a number of exhibits ranging from a small exhibit of photographs of Chinese Muslims from the Harvard-Yenching Library to a major exhibit of contemporary art from Myanmar; from a student art exhibit as part of the ASEAN@50 conference to photography exhibits in the CGIS Concourse that included photographs of Nepal and Xinjiang.
As part of its 20th anniversary celebration, the Asia Center is featuring pieces from most of the exhibits it has organized over the years. The variety of artwork not only underscores the richness of Asia-related resources at Harvard and the vibrant arts scene in the CGIS Complex but also the talent, vision, and breadth of subject matter explored by the artists.
