Haoyi Su

Haoyi Su is a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard University Asia Center. His research focuses on state formation, state-building, and regime development in Southeast Asia. He asks why countries facing comparable historical and structural conditions follow divergent political trajectories, examining how relationships among political parties, militaries, and local elites shape the organization and distribution of state power. Drawing on archival research and comparative historical analysis, his current work explores how the sequencing of political mobilization, organizational consolidation, and elite incorporation influences the emergence of state institutions and political regimes during the anticolonial and early postcolonial periods. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Zhejiang University and his B.A. and M.A. in history from Renmin University of China. Before joining Harvard, he was a visiting scholar at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.
