Overview

The Vietnam Studies Program at Harvard University is an interdisciplinary home for the study of Vietnam and a scholarly bridge fostering exchange between Vietnam and the World. Housed within the Southeast Asia Initiative of the Harvard Asia Center, the Program brings together faculty, students, scholars, and partners whose work spans the humanities, social sciences, public policy, health, education, environment, technology, culture, and the arts.

Vietnam offers a powerful lens for understanding many of the defining challenges of the 21st century. Over the course of a single century, Vietnam has experienced colonization, war and postwar reconstruction, rapid economic reform, widening inequality, climate vulnerability, and technological transformation. Today, Vietnam is a dynamic society and regional actor whose experiences illuminate urgent questions about development, governance, memory, sustainability, innovation, and global interdependence.

The Program aims to strengthen Harvard’s capacity for serious, sustained, and interdisciplinary Vietnam Studies by supporting research collaboration, student learning, public programming, partnerships, and opportunities for engagement in Vietnam and across the Vietnamese diaspora.
