Tokuhiro Ikeda

Vice Admiral Tokuhiro Ikeda graduated from the Japan National Defense Academy in 1981. He then joined the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force. Vice Admiral Ikeda served as Commanding Officer of JS Yamayuki, Escort Division 5, Escort Flotilla 1, Fleet Escort Force, and Commandant Sasebo District. He retired as Commandant Kure District in July 2016. Most recently, he served as a senior advisor of the National Security Unit at Fujitsu Limited, as well as a senior advisor to the National Security Secretariat (NSS) (2018 to 2020). His expertise includes ballistic missile defense and maritime operations, and recent publications include “JMSDF Activities in the Indo-Pacific Region.”

During the 2021–22 academic year, his research will examine maritime security in East Asia.

Mesrob Vartavarian

 

Mesrob Vartavarian studied history at UCLA (BA/MA) and Cambridge (Ph.D.) and began his career as a scholar of early colonial South Asia but has since shifted his research focus to security questions relating to the Asia-Pacific since 1945. His interests also include American foreign relations, praetorian politics, and borderland insurgencies by ethnic minorities in Southeast Asia.
